Gruber
The grandfather of Andrei Gruber came to Rosia Montana in search of gold. As he was German, people started calling him gruber (miner). As time passed by, he became known all over the place by this name, so he decided to adopt it as his official name.
The hostel, meanwhile, has been constructed and maintained by Andrei, the youngest representative of the Gruber family. He lives with his mother and brother in the same old house their grandfather built when he first came to Rosia Montana.
The accommodation is active in supporting the local culture and tradition of Transylania
To date, Rosia Montana is under threat of destruction by Gabriel Resource's mining project proposal, which intends to extract the gold in the Apuseni Mountains and destroy the whole village. Nevertheless, the ‘Save Rosia Montana Campaign' manages to win the day-by-day fight for the salvation of the region with the support and solidarity of the people in the village.
Moreover, the ‘Alburnus Maior Association' initiated a series of alternative development projects for the area. They include the hay festival - FânFest - which is the largest and most important environmental event in the country. La Gruber Hostel supports the festival, by assuring free accommodation and tours for the performing artists at the festival.
Andrei, the owner, is one of the best guides in Rosia Montana. His tours to the hidden treasures of Rosia Montana convince tourists that the beauty and heritage of this place must not be destroyed. He is an active member in saving Rosia Montana, always adding new members to this fight.
