The city was founded by the Saxon colonists in the 12th century and was first attested in 1191. It became the most important Saxon city and was fortified with four levels of walls. It is the only town in the region that has never been conquered. Due to the guilds and the economical exchanges, Sibiu became a very rich city and began to be the economical, political and cultural centre of Transylvania. In the 18th century, it was named the capital city.
Many artists were brought here and there is a vast collection of paintings, books, statues and tombstones. Most of them can be admired at the Samuil von Bruckenthal Museum, the first museum opened in Romania.
Today, Sibiu is a booming economical centre, in particular due to the German investors. Most of the old buildings have been restored and the main squares reveal the medieval ambience of the city.
