Hermannstadt is the traditional German name for Sibiu. Sibiu is a city with a rich cultural heritage. It is the city with the first printed book in Romanian; it also has the first museum (the Bruckenthal Museum) and the first hospital in Romania. In addition, it is one of the seven walled citadels in Romania.

For all these and many other reasons, Sibiu was designated, together with Luxembourg, as the European ‘Capital of Culture' for 2007.
